You’re ABSOLUTELY right when it comes to the inconvenience or absence of options at rhe dining car. One of the challenges of traveling long distance by train is the food. You can buy food in their dining car, but you are going to pay through the roof for it. The quality while not terrible is not worth the cost. On a 2-night journey, I try to limit myself to one meal in the dinning car on the day I am on the train the entire day. Amtrak’s dining cars will once again use metal utensils, with meals served on real china. The first updated cars go into service near the end of this month, and over three years will be added onto all long-distance western routes. The spiffed-up coaches and sleeper cars, and improved dining service, will be a big change for a fleet that was decades old — and showing it. Broken curtains, stained seats and worn-out cushions were among the problems, said Jim Mathews, president and CEO of the National Association for Railroad Passengers.

The only kicker is that they cannot, understandably, be consumed in the Dining Car. You can store and eat your own goodies at your seat, in your private room, or even in restaurants de palamos one of the Sightseer Lounges, should your train offer one. All meals in the Dining Car are complimentary for first-class passengers. Before the pandemic, coach passengers could make dining reservations and pay for their meals.

Other passengers would appreciate it if you refrain from smelly foods. A selection of non-alcohol drinks is available throughout your trip. This will be my 1st long distance Amtrak ride and I’ve packed , nuts, chips, Crustables PB&J sandwiches, bottled ice coffee, fig Newton’s and cut fruit. They don’t “encourage” you to bring your own food, they tolerate it.

The throwback to a golden era of train travel will only be available for certain routes. In all cases, the meals are packaged in disposable containers, situated on a hard plastic tray, and come with everything prepackaged. These meals are among some of the most unappetizing meals that Amtrak offers, so you’ll definitely want to consider this before booking. Depending on the train’s arrival on the final day, a continental breakfast may be served instead of a hot breakfast. You’ll be seated with other travelers to complete a 4-party table.

For now, coach passengers will continue to buy food in the café car. In a few months, they will be able to eat in the dining car and buy food off the new menu. Now, Amtrak is restoring full dining car service onboard, complete with sit-down meals at normal meal times. Eligible services include the California Zephyr, Coast Starlight, Empire Builder, Southwest Chief, Sunset Limited, and Texas Eagle . Services east of the Mississippi will receive the updated dining program at a later time. Remember that not all regional trains have food service, like the Hiawatha.

Let’s first talk about what food is available for you to buy aboard the train. Some people I have talked to didn’t realize we even had trains that run across our country. That’s not a knock on Amtrak — it’s just frightening to know that there are many Americans capable of using it all up with the meager vegetable matter at hand.
